It’s likely to be another busy summer for West Ham this year.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have had a mixed season so far, with inconsistency accompanying the team’s obvious potential.
The Hammers have been hurt by injuries, especially in the defensive areas. For much of the season, they have been without Winston Reid and Fabian Balbuena, with the latter having been a vital part of the manager’s plans.
West Ham have options at the back but appear to have grown reliant on Issa Diop, whose performances this season have earned him plenty of plaudits.
It is likely that the club will make several moves at the end of the season to ensure that they are well prepared for the following campaign, which could signal the recruitment of yet more defensive talent.
So, without further ado, take a look at six central defenders who we feel West Ham should consider pursuing in the summer transfer window.
Willi Orban
Orban is a key player for RB Leipzig and is among the most underrated defenders in Germany. He is strong, commanding and adept on the ball. He’d add leadership qualities and intelligence to the ranks.
Djene Dakonam
Djene would be a strong signing for West Ham. He reads the game excellently and has established himself as a vital member of the Getafe team.
Domagoj Vida
Vida would add a versatile, experienced option to Pellegrini’s squad. The Croatian international can play out from the back and is a tough-tackling central defender.
Nicolas Nkoulou
Nkoulou is an important player for Torino and would be a shrewd signing for West Ham. He’s good in the air, an intelligent decision-maker and a well-rounded defender.
Niklas Stark
Stark could be an excellent signing for West Ham. He’s not yet achieved his once-immense potential but remains a strong defender; he is aggressive, dominant and forward-thinking.
Andreas Christensen
Christensen would be a clever signing for West Ham. Maurizio Sarri has frozen him out at Chelsea, and he could be seeking a departure from Stamford Bridge. He is experienced despite his young age and has proven to be a high-level Premier League centre-back.
