# West Ham failed in January move to sign Marc Roca

West Ham failed in a January move to sign Espanyol midfielder Marc Roca, according to claims in Spain.

[Sport report](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/espanyol/confidencial-west-ham-e-inter-quisieron-fichar-a-marc-roca-7286315) that both West Ham and Inter made moves to try and sign the player, but both were unsuccessful.

After making initial enquiries over a deal, both teams were told that the player was not for sale unless they could meet his €40 million release clause.

Espanyol were refusing to lose the player on the cheap, having already lost striker Leo Baptistao to Chinese side Wuhan Zall earlier in the transfer window.

Roca is very highly rated in Spain and has even been [linked with moves](https://www.football-espana.net/75558/real-madrid-want-espanyol-midfielder-marc-roca) to join Real Madrid in the past.

Playing mainly in a deeper role, the 22-year-old is viewed among Spain’s next generation of midfielders.

Roca has been ever-present for Espanyol in La Liga this season and will no doubt continue to attract interest going forward if he maintains his current form.
