# Hammers legend Sir Geoff Hurst believes Wilshere has ‘great opportunity’

Former West Ham striker Sir Geoff Hurst believes Jack Wilshere has a ‘great opportunity’ at the club this season.

Wilshere signed for the Hammers on a free transfer this summer after leaving Arsenal following the expiration of his contract, and the former England international hero believes he can now kick-start his stagnant career.

Wilshere was once seen as the future of Arsenal’s midfield, as well as England’s, but injuries and dips in form in recent years had seen his position as a main man for club and country become reduced to just a bit-part player.

Now at the London Stadium, Wilshere will be hoping he can start to fulfil some of his potential, and Hurst feels he could thrive in a new environment. Talking to [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en/news/arsenal-exit-offers-wilshere-great-opportunity-with-west-ham/nbno3oo75eg1eflzqfk4p4l3), Hurst had this to say on Wilshere:

> It is a great opportunity, I wouldn’t say resurrect, that is too strong and it is obviously subject to keeping himself fit. That’s a very important issue for him.

> He has got the opportunity to play in a side now that we have acquired other players, not just him. I think that’s good for the club as a whole.

> If the teams performs well, increases its position with Jack, if he performs then I wouldn’t discount him from getting back into the national team squad. That’s if he performs like we know he can on a regular basis, without the injuries.

> The team playing well also helps people individually and brings a focus to that player. So I think the two things could combine very well. I think that’s an opportunity.

> I certainly think \[Gareth\] Southgate would pick him, as well as two or three others. They have a chance in the game to come and make a go of it.

Wilshere was controversially left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, and Wilshere will be hoping that a good season for the Hammers could see him regain his spot for the Three Lions.
