# West Ham to step up pursuit of Alfie Mawson

West Ham are ready to step up their pursuit of Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, according to [reports](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/west-ham-uniteds-pursuit-swansea-14903514).

After being told by Newcastle United that Jamaal Lascelles is not for sale, the Hammers are set to go back in for Mawson after having a bid rejected by the Swans earlier in the window.

The news that Winston Reid will miss the start of the season has only heightened West Ham’s need to bring in a new defender and it looks like Mawson is the man they want.

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton also have an interest in the  24-year-old, although the Blues are chasing other defensive targets, such as Barcelona’s Yerry Mina.

However, with Toby Alderweireld’s future at White Hart Lane in doubt, Spurs could be in the market for another defender and Mawson is one of the names on their shortlist.

After getting a lot of their transfers done early, buying a defender could be the last piece of business that the Hammers do this summer.
