Declan Rice was the shining light in a disappointing performance for the Republic of Ireland against Turkey today in the West Ham youngster’s debut appearance for the Boys in Green.
Rice was alongside Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan and Wolves’ Matt Doherty in receiving his first cap, as Turkey won 1-0 at in Antalya courtesy of a Mehmet Topal goal.
However Rice was a standout performer, with the 19-year old versatile Hammer turning in an assured performance on the left side of a defensive trio, moving into midfield later in the game.
Filling in as an understudy while manager Martin O’Neill had several senior players out with injuries or through being rested, Rice will have given his boss food for thought ahead of further friendlies against France and the United States in May.
