A retrospective look at West Ham’s bizarre free transfers

By the time you read this, West Ham may well have finalised a deal to sign 36-year-old left-back Patrice Evra on a deal until the end of the season in what is the latest in a line of questionable free transfer moves West Ham have made in recent years.

Evra is a player who has enjoyed a great deal of success through his career but he’s been out of work since November after being released by Marseille for kicking a fan in the head prior to a Europa League game which led to a seven-month ban from all UEFA club competitions.

West Ham have made some savvy moves in the free agent market, with Pablo Zabaleta a glowing success, but others have not worked out as well, and we’ve taken a look back at some of the iconic names that the club brought in for nothing since David’s Gold and Sullivan took over the club in January 2010.

Note: Most of these players are less iconic, more moronic.
