# West Ham are prioritising a move for Alfie Mawson

West Ham are targeting Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson as a potential January signing, [according to The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/12/21/swansea-city-defender-alfie-mawson-transfer-target-forwest-ham/).

David Moyes has found moderate success with the Hammers in recent weeks, with the London club now unbeaten in three league games, which includes a 1-0 win over Chelsea and a goalless stalemate against Arsenal at the London Stadium.

This run of form has seen West Ham climb out of the relegation zone and up to 15th place in the Premier League, and now David Moyes is looking to consolidate the Hammers’ position by strengthening in January.

One key target position is centre-back, with Moyes having had to play left-back Aaron Cresswell in the centre in recent weeks, and Alfie Mawson is now being lined up as a prime target for the club.

Swansea are going through a rough period this season. Having sacked manager Paul Clement on Wednesday, the Swans sit rock bottom of the Premier League table on 12 points, and are bracing themselves for interest in Mawson when the transfer window re-opens.

The 23-year old has so far failed to repeat his impressive form from last season, having signed from Barnsley in the summer of 2016, but is still regarded as a highly promising young English centre half.

Since selling Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente last summer, the Swans have plummeted down the table and the loss of Mawson would be another huge blow to their survival chances.

With 18 months left on his contract, Swansea are keen to tie Mawson down to a new deal. However this could prove difficult with the club’s Premier League status hanging in the balance, and an offer of £25million may tempt Swansea to cash in now.
