West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has admitted that the club passed on the opportunity to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea for just £10million.
The Belgian striker was offered to Sam Allardyce, and although Lukaku had at that point shown great potential, the now Everton boss wasn’t prepared to splash out on him, given his lack of experience in the Premier League.
Instead, Allardyce was only prepared to take him on loan, however that resulted in the deal not going through.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Sullivan recalled the offering the Belgian to Sam. He said;
I asked Sam if he fancied Lukaku [for £10million].
Sam said he’d take him on loan but he wouldn’t buy him for that. Again I’ve supported the manager.
Lukaku would go on to sign for Everton for £28million, and would become their record Premier League goalscorer.
At the beginning of last summer, Lukaku signed for Manchester United for a staggering £75million, that could rise to £90million.
