# Injury Update: Carroll nursing a groin injury

Every week when West Ham’s Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke posts his [injury update column](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2017/february/08-february/treatment-room), you always fear that a familiar name might crop up, and this week he has.

Andy Carroll has been a key player for West Ham over the last month or so, scoring four goals in his last four games as the Hammers have climbed to ninth in the Premier League table.

West Ham could close the gap on eighth-placed West Brom this weekend with a win over the Baggies at the London Stadium, but Carroll will be carrying a little knock into the game.

Vandenbroucke has noted that Carroll was brought off early against Southampton with an injury which has flagged up in a couple of games recently, but the striker will be prepared for the game as normal.

“Andy Carroll came off with an injury at St Mary’s. He had a similar problem in the game at Middlesbrough, but we were able to prepare him for the Manchester City and the Southampton games, where he did brilliantly with limited training.

“We will now work with Andy to prepare him for Saturday. It is always a fine balance not to put him at risk of serious injury as he has not trained a lot in 2017.”

As for West Ham’s other absentees, Sam Byram has been in full training this week despite missing last week’s win over Southampton as a precaution having only just returned from a four-month injury layoff with a torn hamstring.

Havard Nordtveit has also trained all week following his injury while Alvaro Arbeloa is back in full training after missing the last few weeks.

Arthur Masuaku has entered the final stage of his rehabilitation from a knee injury. Having trained with the Development Squad of late, the left-back is expected to return to first-team training tomorrow.

As for Diafra Sakho, it appears he’ll be out for a little longer than anticipated. While initial projections had hoped for Sakho to be available by March, Vandenbroucke notes that they’re looking to bring Sakho back into the fold in late March or early April as he recovers from December back surgery.

Finally, Angelo Ogbonna’s knee surgery was a success and he is now back in London where he will begin his rehab programme which is set to take between 12-16 weeks which does rule him out for the rest of the season.
