# Gareth Southgate to watch Carroll ahead of England recall

Andy Carroll’s fine for of late has not gone unnoticed it seems.

The [Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4201150/Gareth-Southgate-check-West-Ham-s-Andy-Carroll.html) are reporting that England manager Gareth Southgate will be in attendance at the London Stadium on Saturday as West Ham take on West Brom the Premier League.

Southgate will have his eyes specifically on Carroll as he looks to finalise his squad ahead of the upcoming international matches against Germany and Lithuania in March.

Carroll’s ninth and last England cap came in October 2012 against San Marino and he hasn’t featured in an England squad since.

A slew of injuries have prevented him from enjoying a prolonged and sustained period of form and fitness which saw Roy Hodgson continue to overlook the former Liverpool striker.

Since returning from his most recent injury lay-off, Carroll looks fitter and stronger than ever and his efforts are being rewarded on the field with four goals in West Ham’s last four games as they have risen up the table and into ninth place.

On his day, Carroll is a handful for any defender in football given his freakish size and strength combination, but a man of his build and injury history does require careful management and in each of West Ham’s last three games he has been brought off early as a precaution with the medical staff aware that he’s nursing a slight groin issue, but Carroll has trained this week as normal ahead of the West Brom game.

With Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge both really struggling for form and Danny Welbeck only just back from his latest length injury lay-off, there is a real opportunity for Carroll, the man in form, to stake his claim for a spot in Southgate’s next England squad.

Both Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell will be looking to impress as well having both been called up to the England squad for the first time back in the Autumn, with Cresswell being handed his first cap, something Antonio is still waiting for.
