# West Ham pull out of Callum Paterson deal

West Ham have had to pull out of a deal to sign Hearts right-back Callum Paterson in January after the player suffered a major knee injury during last week’s win over Kilmarnock.

Scottish Newspaper the [Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/hearts-star-callum-paterson-cruelly-9551390) understood that the Hammers were seriously interested in signing Paterson this month but his horror injury has put an end to any possible move.

A source close to the situation said: “It’s desperately disappointing news for Callum because West Ham’s interest was very serious indeed. They were on the brink of making an offer and that would have been an incredible move for the lad.

“But there is no indication that they’ll be back when he is fit and it’s a similar story with all of the clubs that had been showing interest from down south. Callum had a fantastic 2016 but the way it ended for him is beyond cruel.”

It’s believed a £1m deal was in the pipelines for Paterson but an ACL injury will see him miss up to nine months on the sidelines.

The versatile 22-year-old started out as a striker but has played all over the pitch, including centre-back, central midfield and on the wing before finding a settled home at right-back.

However, the five-time Scotland international hasn’t lost his knack for scoring goals with 10 in 25 appearances this season prior to his injury and 39 goals in total for Hearts.

Paterson is also wanted by Derby and Wigan and with his contract expiring in the summer, it’s possible that the Hammers could wait until then to make their move for the fullback once he’s had several months to recover from his injury.
