# West Ham have the 19th most expensive squad in the world

The Football Observatory have [compiled a list of the most expensive squads in the world](https://www.football-observatory.com/IMG/sites/b5wp/2016/159/fr/), and West Ham rank surprisingly highly.

They note that the current Manchester United squad was purchased for a mammoth €719m, making it the most expensive squad ever assembled in the history of football – largely boosted by the world-record €110m transfer of Paul Pogba from Juventus in the summer.

While Pogba is worth more than half of West Ham’s entire squad, Slaven Bilic’s group of players is the 19th most expensive squad in the world – ahead of the likes of AC Milan, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke, as well as Premier League champions Leicester City and Europa League holders Sevilla.

The Football Observatory state that West Ham have spent €196m putting their squad together which is the eighth-most of any Premier League side.

That figure would’ve been helped by the club-record €24m (£20.5m) arrival of Andre Ayew from Swansea back in the summer. The Ghanaian attacker is currently sidelined with a thigh injury.

The total cost of our squad could be on the rise again soon if Simone Zaza’s loan becomes permanent. The Italian is on loan from Juventus and if the striker makes an undisclosed number of appearances his move become permanent for a £20m fee.

Not all of our signings need to be astronomical fees. Dimitri Payet, for example, was picked up for just £10.5m from Marseille last year, while Aaron Cresswell looks a snip at £3.5m from Ipswich in 2014.
