# Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic rejects West Ham move

Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic has rejected the chance to join West Ham this summer, according to Spanish source [AS](https://en.as.com/en/2016/07/29/football/1469809386_616597.html).

The Croatian midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer, but is now likely to stay put according to his agent Nikky Vuksan who confirms his client is fighting for his place in the Madrid team.

“*I haven’t spoken to the club, there is no need. Right now he is fighting for his place in the team, as is the case with every player except Cristiano, who is the only one who has a guaranteed place in the first 11,*” Vuksan told *Sportske Novosti*.

There was strong interest from Serie A for the 22-year-old midfielder with Juventus, Napoli, Roma, AC Milan and his former club Inter Milan all keen on bringing Kovacic back to Italian football, but Vuksan says he is in Zinedine Zidane’s plans for next season.

“*There are always rumours at this time of year but Kovacic is a Madrid player, his manager has faith in him and he helps him and supports him. Every player has to prove their worth to find a place in the team and at Real Madrid it is even more difficult.*”

Kovacic joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan last summer for €30m and made 34 appearances for Los Blancos across all competitions, just 11 of which were starts which sparked rumours that he could be offloaded this summer.

There were offers from the Premier League from Liverpool, Everton and West Ham as well as the aforementioned Serie A clubs, but for now Kovacic is keen on battling his way back into the Madrid team.
