# Diego Poyet set for West Ham exit after Europa League snub

West Ham midfielder Diego Poyet is looking increasingly likely to leave the club this summer after he was [omitted from the Hammers’ squad](https://readwestham.com/2016/07/26/west-ham-register-squad-for-europa-league/) for their Europa League third qualifying round fixtures against Slovenian side NK Domzale.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined the Hammers on a free transfer in summer of 2014 from Charlton after his contract expired. He burst onto the scene at The Valley during the 2013/14 season and was named the Addicks’ Player of the Season before leaving.

Poyet was used sparingly his first season with the club, making just three Premier League appearances and five in all competitions in a season which included an indifferent loan spell with Huddersfield.

Slaven Bilic looked to give the Uruguay U20 international a chance early last season, handing him five appearances in the Europa League qualifiers where he did impress but was ultimately not considered for the first-team and was sent out on loan to MK Dons and later Charlton.

The young midfielder travelled with the squad on their pre-season tour of the USA and featured in both games and [speaking to ReadWestHam](https://readwestham.com/2016/07/06/poyet-i-want-stay-west-ham/) in Seattle he spoke of his desire to stay at West Ham this coming season.

Unfortunately for him, after the US tour Poyet returned to England to team-up with the youth squad as opposed to travelling with the first-team to Austria, only fuelling speculation that Poyet will leave the club in some capacity.

Son of former Chelsea and Tottenham star Gus Poyet, Diego was highly-rated as a teenager but has never been given a real chance to prove his worth to West Ham. His omission from the Europa League squad for the upcoming games against NK Domzale appears to be the final nail in the coffin that a move is near.

Bilic likes to give his young players a chance in the first-team and used the Europa League to that exact purpose last season by handing first-team debuts to the likes of Reece Oxford, Lewis Page, Alex Pike and Djair-Parfitt Williams, and one would’ve expected to see Poyet involved again this time around but that will not happen.

With two-years left to run on his current contract, it’s unknown whether Poyet will be loaned out for first-team experience in the Football League again or leave on a permanent basis but it seems apparent that he doesn’t have an immediate future in East London.
