# West Ham set to sign Jonathan Calleri on six-month loan

West Ham are poised to sign highly-rated Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri on an initial six-month loan, according to reports in Argentina.

The Hammers were in the running with Tottenham, Inter Milan and Sevilla to sign the striker from Uruguayan outfit Deportivo Maldonado, but it now appears West Ham have won the race.

The 22-year-old was signed by the wealthy Uruguayan second-tier side in an €11m deal in January from Boca Juniors where he had been playing with former Hammer Carlos Tevez, before being immediately sent out on loan to Brazilian giants Sao Paolo where he’s netted 12 goals in 17 appearances.

Calleri [confirmed to reporters](https://www.tycsports.com/futbol/calleri-se-despidio-de-san-pablo-no-queria-que-fuera-asi?cx_level=mas_vistas) after Sao Paolo’s 4-1 aggregate defeat to Atletico Nacional in the Copa Libertadores that he had played his last game for the club and was disappointed it ended the way it did.

It’s believed Deportivo Maldonado will now loan out Calleri to a top European side, with West Ham poised to secure his signature on an initial six month loan deal.

Argentine football journalist Cesar Merlo states “*Jonathan Calleri, close to go to West Ham. There is the concrete chance being assigned for six months.*”

After signing Vincent Janssen, Tottenham have seemingly cooled their interest leaving West Ham the likely destination for Calleri, who is believed to complete his move once he secures a work permit.

Of Italian descent, Calleri is hopeful of securing an EU work permit but it has been problematic so far as he has been trying for several months to no avail.

This isn’t the first time West Ham have done business with Deportivo Maldonado, who have made great profits in buying talented young players and selling them on for larger fees.

The Hammers signed young Paraguayan striker Brian Montenegro on a season-long loan during their 2011/12 season in the Championship. The teenage striker made one appearance for the club, in a 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and then returned to South America at the end of the season.
