# After a year apart, Bilic will reunite with Gokhan Tore

West Ham are on the verge of signing Besiktas winger Gokhan Tore on an initial season-long loan deal with an option to buy him for £10m should he impress over the course of the 2016/17 season.

Born in the German city of Koln, Tore began his career in the academy of Bayer Leverkusen before joining the Chelsea set up in 2009. Two impressive years in their U21 side helped the 24-year-old catch the eye of Bundesliga side Hamburg, who signed the winger in the summer of 2011 for £1.1m.

Tore never really took off with Hamburg, making 24 appearances without scoring in his one and only season with the club. The summer of 2012 presented a new opportunity for Tore as Rubin Kazan shelled out £2.5m for the promising attacker.

Again, Tore failed to nail down a starting role in Russia making just seven appearances in all competitions for Rubin Kazan, without scoring. They were ready to give up on Tore, but one man wasn’t.

Slaven Bilic was managing Lokomotiv Moscow during the 2012-13 season, the one year Tore had in Russian football. He saw enough in the Turkish youth international to make a move for him. Bilic was made Besiktas manager in the summer of 2013 and his first move was bringing in Tore on a season-long loan and this was the start of their fledgling friendship.

Under Bilic’s tutelage, Tore netted his first professional goal on his Besiktas debut against Trabzonspor and went on to score four times and assist in a further eight goals in 33 appearances in all competitions which prompted Bilic and Besiktas to make Tore’s move permanent for £3.8m.

His second year under Bilic in Turkey, Tore came on leaps and bounds and was even more productive, scoring nine times and assisting on 11 occasions in 43 appearances.

Bilic was the appointed West Ham manager and again, his first move was to bring Tore to Upton Park. Besiktas blocked the move but one year on, Bilic is again reunited with his favourite player.

The current West Ham boss brought out the best in Tore and managed to add elements to his game that were previously missing. Tore established himself as one of the most sought after players in the league during the two seasons Bilic was in charge of the club.

After failing to make an impact at Chelsea, Hamburg and Rubin Kazan, Bilic is responsible for putting Tore back on the footballing map. He had a close relationship with Tore. He understood he had a troubled background and empathised with him. He earned Tore’s respect and got him playing with discipline and an improved work ethic.

No manager before or since Slaven Bilic’s two-year stint with Besiktas has managed to get as much out of Gokhan Tore as he did. The Turkish international winger has a burning desire to silence the doubters and has realised his potential thanks to Bilic. Bringing them together again in East London will help all involved progress further.
