# Hammers given £1.5m transfer boost due to Downing’s promotion clause

West Ham have been received an extra £1.5m in transfer funds due to a clause put into the deal which sent Stewart Downing back to his hometown club Middlesbrough.

According to the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3579023/West-Ham-additional-1-5million-Middlesbrough-promotion-Premier-League-Stewart-Downing-deal.html), it was built into the transfer that ‘Boro would pay the Hammers an extra £1.5m should they achieve promotion this season.

In a game reportedly worth £170m to the winner, Middlesbrough took on Brighton at the Riverside yesterday knowing a point would be enough to secure them automatic promotion back to the Premier League following a seven-year absence.

Dubbed the biggest game in Championship history, Cristhian Stuani’s first-half tap-in gave the host’s the lead, which was later cancelled out by a Dale Stephens header but the 1-1 draw saw Middlesbrough back into the big-time.

Downing came on as a second-half substitute for the injured Gaston Ramirez to help his boyhood club return to the Premier League. The former England international left the club in 2009 when they were relegated to England’s second tier, and spent time with Aston Villa and Liverpool before moving to Upton Park in 2013 where he scored seven times in 74 games.

The 31-year-old was keen on a return to ‘Boro last summer, and the Championship side shelled out £5.5m to bring him back to the Riverside, but also agreed to pay the Hammers an extra £1.5m if they were promoted which was confirmed on Saturday.
