Mauro Zarate joined West ham in 2014 and since joining there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not he is good enough to play for West Ham week in week out. The Argentinian started his career off in Valez Sarsfield making 99 appearances scoring 28 goals. In 2009, he moved to Lazio for a fee of around 20 million euros where he only scored 12 times in 68 games.
Since being at West Ham Mauro Zarate spent most of last season on loan to QPR however he only played 4 games. With West Ham short of attacking options at the start of the season, Slaven Bilic chose to start Mauro in the first two games. No one had high expectations for Mauro in these two games however against Arsenal he really stepped up to the plate chipping in with a goal and an all round good performance. However in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester he didn’t look up and at times he held the ball for too long. Is Inconsistency going to be a problem?
I think that Mauro has the ability to become a great player he is very talented and has plenty of tricks and skills he was desperate to join West Ham and now he should be given his chance to prove himself. However with the return of Andy Carroll just upon the horizons will he get the play time that he needs to develop?
I also asked some fellow writers and supporters their opinion on Mauro.
Rob Mullis: Mauro looks like he has Bilic’s trust in him this season; something Allardyce never gave him, and hopefully something that will see him fulfil his potential. A player who buys out their own contract to put the West Ham shirt is someone who deserves their chance to prove it.
Willem Vernooij: I think Zarate’s qualities don’t lie as a striker, but rather as a CAM/winger. Argentinian football is very different from English football as it is way more attacking and defensive duties are often neglected. For the same reason why Ciro Immobile was great in Italy but failed horribly at Dortmund: The high-pressure football in Germany didn’t suit him at all, hence his unproductivity. Zarate’s flair and creativity is best used on the wings, since we’re short on wingers and already have a fantastic CAM in
Joe Burrows: Mauro Zarate looks like a great talent, with a lot of flair. I am happy Bilic has shown trust in the player, something Allardyce failed to do. The player definitely deserves a chance, following the desperation he showed to move to East London.
