All West Ham needed was a home game to turn their season around and get points on the board.
After three tough away trips courtesy of the World Athletics Championships being held at the London Stadium, the Hammers needed to return home with a bang and secure all three points against Huddersfield.
Slaven Bilic changed things up and went with a back three on Monday night and it prevailed as the Hammers came away victorious.
After a nervy first half, West Ham grew into the game in the second period and took the lead when Pedro Obiang’s effort took a big deflection and looped in off the post.
West Ham doubled their lead and secured the win minutes later when Andre Ayew, who came off the bench and provided the assist for the opener, prodded home from close range after being quickest to react from Jose Fonte’s knock down.
There couldn’t have been a better time to pick up the first win of the season. Here are our player ratings.
Joe Hart - 7
Relatively untroubled, Hart made a couple of good saves when called upon and his distribution was spot on.
Pablo Zabaleta - 7
Zabaleta was solid defensively, won nearly every tackle and provided support in attack to Antonio.
Jose Fonte - 7
Easily his best performance for the club since arriving in January.
Winston Reid - 7
Anchored the defence brilliantly and kept Mounie in check.
James Collins - 7
Collins helped form a back three that looked very solid all night.
Aaron Cresswell - 7
Cresswell’s delivery from wide areas and set plays was pivotal on the night.
Cheikhou Kouyate - 7
Kouyate was in fine form last night as controlled that midfield.
Pedro Obiang - 7
Obiang’s partnership with Kouyate is West Ham’s strongest midfield option and his effort was good enough for the goal.
Michail Antonio - 8
The man of the match on the night, Antonio’s tireless runs and threatening crosses were a staple of West Ham’s attack all night.
Javier Hernandez - 6
Has one early chance deflected onto the bar but was largely ineffective playing a wide left role.
Andy Carroll - 7
Carroll made an instant impact, being the focal point to the attack and held the ball up excellently well.
