Slaven Bilic’s men are currently sat in 13th place on the Premier League table and although that position may seem mediocre yet safe, the Hammers are in pretty poor form.
It’s looking as though West Ham’s Premier League status is secured ahead of next season but it goes without saying that it’s been an unacceptable campaign for all those associated and they’ll look to make the 2017/18 season a far more enjoyable one.
So, just what has gone wrong this term? We’ve picked out the key points that set West Ham for failure.
No consistent goalscorer
Although Andy Carroll is a good striker and Andre Ayew has been popping up with goals in recent times, West Ham haven’t had a settled, consistent striker this season.
The likes of Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri have been woeful signings and have left West Ham without a consistent goalscorer.
Money spent on the wrong players
Forking out over £15 million on Jose Fonte and Robert Snodgrass in January has been counter-productive to say the least, and it’s hard to justify the price of many of West Ham’s summer signings. They need to be more intelligent in their business.
Failure to strengthen in the right areas
It’s been clear to see that certain areas of the squad are weaker than others. Right-back hasn’t been strengthened at all, central defence is still very questionable and the lack of depth up top is worrying.
Unrest off the pitch
It was always going to take some getting used to with a new stadium, but everything has been a bit messy. From the atmosphere to the fans’ behaviour, nothing’s really gone right off the pitch and hopefully there’ll be more to be positive about next season.
Bilic's naivety
Although he’s been dealt a difficult hand this season, Bilic’s tactics and faith in players have been pretty embarrassing at times.
He’s failed to manage games proactively and has often left a lot to be desired in his team selections.
Lack of leadership
Although West Ham have a number of leaders in their squad, very few players have really taken a hold of the situation and took charge. This needs to change.
