Wayne Rooney’s future is certainly up in the air at the moment and one club that has been linked with bringing the all-time England top scorer away from Old Trafford is West Ham.
The Hammers have been touted as one of many potential suitors for Rooney’s signature in recent times, with it looking increasingly likely that the 31-year-old will leave Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Rooney has fallen heavily out of favour under new United boss Jose Mourinho since his arrival in the summer, failing to start up front due to the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and also failing to feature as a number ten as a result of the emergence of Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a United shirt.
So, would the United skipper be a good signing for West Ham this summer?
We’ve taken a look at five reasons why he wouldn’t be a worthwhile addition at the London Stadium!
Experience isn't the issue
One thing Rooney would provide is experience. He’s got an immense pedigree, but the Hammers are hardly lacking in terms of experienced heads. They need young, hungry talent.
Money can be better spent elsewhere
Rooney’s transfer fee would probably be affordable, his wages are likely to be astronomical. It’d simply be too much and wouldn’t be value for money.
He'd restrict Lanzini
Manuel Lanzini is West Ham’s most creative player and should be right at the heart of things. With Rooney at West Ham, he’d have to be pushed out onto the flank. Although he’s shown at times he can be effective off the wing, he’s certainly best used centrally.
No future vision
Rooney is 31, regressing and not showing any signs being a worthwhile investment for West Ham. The Hammers should look towards a more future-focussed approach in recruitment.
Unnecessary pressure
Through no fault of Rooney’s own, signing him would simply add even more pressure at West Ham.
Enough controversy has surrounded the club this season and Rooney’s arrival would put them right in the spotlight. It could be harmful for the future if Rooney is unable to hit the heights he needs to at his next club.
