West Ham don’t need a new right-back says David Gold
West Ham United’s joint-chairman, David Gold has told Hammers’ supporters looking for a new right-back to look no further than Sam Byram.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Gold offered a reminder to supporters of the talents of last season’s January arrival.
Gold explained:
People also ask me about a new right back but we cannot forget that we have a talented full-back in Sam Byram who has just returned to first-team action following a lengthy injury, and he looked very impressive in the second half last weekend.
Byram joined the club this time last year from Leeds United on a four-year deal but has found game time hard to come by since making the step up to the Premier League.
The former Leeds man impressed during his time in the Championship and was the latest youngster to leave the club, but has struggled with injuries since joining West Ham.
The Hammers have signed Jose Fonte from Southampton, and have also been linked with Inter Milan’s Andrea Ranocchia as they seek defensive reinforcements.
West Ham have not enjoyed the greatest first half of their season and languish in mid-table after such a strong campaign last season.
Byram at the age of 23 still has time on his side as he looks to grow into this West Ham side.
