Who’d have thought things could go so sour?
In February, Dimitri Payet signed a new deal to become the highest-paid player in West Ham’s history on a long-term contract running until 2021. Fast-forward 11 months and here he is, saying he doesn’t want to play for the club.
West Ham’s season thus far has been a bit of a shambles. Knocked out of the Europa League in the play-off round back in August, couples with a Premier League campaign that has been an almighty struggle – oh, and no marquee striker signing as promised.
Why would a player of Payet’s calibre want to stay? It’s a fair question, but he’s forever tarnished his relationship with the fans that revered him as a result of his actions over the last few weeks and months.

He appears set to leave the club sooner or later, but West Ham are reluctant to sell this month. According to the Times, Payet wants to return to France for family reasons. The Independent note that the 29-year-old is eager for a return to Marseille.
Marseille have been linked with a sensational €40m bid to resign Payet just 18 months after selling him for €15m to the Hammers.
Payet has a strong connection with Marseille the club, the city and it’s way of life and would like to return to the club where he spent two years at but whether it materialises remains to be seen.
