Injury update: West Ham star returns to training
West Ham star Andre Ayew has returned to training on Monday after spending two months out with a quadriceps injury.
The Ghanaian joined the Hammers from Swansea in the summer for a club record fee of £20m but his game time at his new club has since been limited.
The injury, which has kept him out since his West Ham debut against Chelsea, did not require surgery and the forward was reportedly allowed to return to his former club Marseille for some specialist treatment.
West Ham’s head of medical and sports science, Stijn Vandenbroucke, told the club’s official website:
Andre has worked hard on his rehabilitation and joined the group on Monday. His fitness levels improve with every day that passes and we are all looking forward to seeing him back in action soon.
In his absence, the Hammers have struggled somewhat to continue what was an impressive season last year, in their final campaign at the Boleyn Ground.
Now at their new home in the London Stadium, they sit 15th with just the two wins from their eight games so far.
Vandenbroucke also provided an update on both Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll. Sakho is expected to return to action with the U23 side next week, whilst Carroll’s rehabilitation was taking longer than expected, but he was still making “steady progress”.
Slaven Bilic will be pleased to see one of his key assets in Ayew back in business to help him build on the club’s win against Crystal Palace last weekend. They face Sunderland on Saturday.
