West Ham want Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on loan
West Ham want to sign Manchester United defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on loan as cover for the injured Aaron Cresswell, according to the Daily Mail.
Cresswell is expected to be sidelined for up to four months with a knee ligament injury sustained in a 3-0 friendly win over Karlsruher during West Ham’s pre-season tour of Austria, leaving the Hammers perilously short of fullback cover.
During West Ham’s 2-1 Europa League third qualifying round first leg defeat to Slovenian side NK Domzale on Thursday, West Ham employed natural right-back Sam Byram at left-back to fill the void left by Cresswell.
Finding a stand-in for the 26-year-old is a must for Slaven Bilic before the start of the season, and Manchester United’s teenage defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been identified as a loan target.
The 19-year-old broke into the United first-team last season under Louis van Gaal and made 14 appearances across all competitions, but Jose Mourinho doesn’t see Borthwick-Jackson featuring in his side.
He has informed the England U19 international that he will leave the club this summer either on loan or a permanent basis, and the Hammers are a possible destination for the youngster.
Despite his limited experience, Borthwick-Jackson was an able performer for United last season and would provide more than acceptable shirt-term cover for Aaron Cresswell.
West Ham have already seen a £7m bid turned down by Hull for promising Scottish left-back Andrew Robertson, while the Mirror understand that the Hammers are closing in on the £5m signing of FC Copenhagen left-back Ludwig Augustinsson.
