West Ham striker Elliot Lee has signed for Championship side Barnsley, the Football League club have confirmed.

The 21-year-old will officially join the club on the 1st July, when his West Ham contract expires. The Hammers declined the chance to hand him a new deal, instead they will watch him leave the club for the lower leagues.

Originally tipped for big things, Lee has had a distorted career so far. He’s already had four different loans and only scored seven goals in 40 professional matches in his senior career.

West Ham clearly feel that he won’t ever be able to make the step up to the Premier League, which is why he is being released. But, hopefully he will be able to kick on and improve now at Barnsley in the Championship for the coming seasons.

The club will now move to sign a couple more strikers for the first-team next season, with an impending Europa League campaign at the Olympic Stadium.
