A report by the Chronicle has found that Newcastle United snubbed signing West Ham star Dimitri Payet on a number of occasions during his time at Marseille.
The Magpies were reluctant to sign the Frenchman, who notched seven goals and sixteen assists last season in the top division in France, Ligue 1, because of the fact that the midfielder is considered old at 28 years of age.
Newcastle have obviously missed out massively on the player, with Payet being a revelation for West Ham so far this season. The French international has seven goals and five assists so far and notched two goals against Blackburn in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle’s interest in the player does not come as a surprise, especially as the Magpies have relied heavily on the French leagues for their players over the years, with Yohan Cabaye, Emmanuel Riviere and Moussa Sissoko swapping France for the North East.
