West Ham are monitoring the contract situation of Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, reports the Daily Star.
The Dutch international centre-back is a free agent this summer, and has new terms on the table from Villa, but is considering his options and is holding out for a bigger move.
The 30-year-old was linked with a move to Manchester United and Arsenal following an excellent World Cup campaign with the Netherlands last summer under new United boss Louis van Gaal, but nothing materialised.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Vlaar stated he believed he can go ‘a step higher’ than Aston Villa next season.
“I have in consideration [a new deal], I think about it. I want to maximize my career and think I can go a step higher. I will look at it [before deciding].”
Everton and Sunderland are both also keeping tabs on the defender this summer, but manager Tim Sherwood has publicly expressed his desire to keep Vlaar at Villa Park.
Besiktas have also said to have held talks with Vlaar’s representatives over a possible move.
