Marseille winger Dimitri Payet has rejected West Ham’s initial contract offer, in the region of £60,000-a-week, claims HITC.
The Hammers are said to have agreed a fee for the versatile winger, in the region of £6m, which is deemed too rich by rivals Everton, who are for the time being out of the race.
All is not lost in the bid to sign the 28-year-old, as Payet has told West Ham in negotiations that he’s looking for a slight increase in the wages offered, nearer £80,000-a-week.
That would make the Frenchman the joint-highest earner at the club, along with striker Andy Carroll, who could be set for a return to Newcastle.
Payet was Ligue 1’s top assister last season, with 17, and would add some much needed creativity in the attacking third.
He’s also stated that he’s waiting for the resolution of the future of former West Ham manager target Marcelo Bielsa, before making his decision.
“I am waiting for the contract extension of the manager. I want to be part of this project, but I need to know how and what.“
